2018-07-28 06:13:49 UTC

The Republicans probably took MI because Detroit shrank.

2018-07-28 06:14:38 UTC

ThAnks obama

2018-07-28 06:14:49 UTC

Detroit is fun. They didn't like dealing with the laws they would toss on the rural parts of the state, so MI law has all sorts of exemptions for cities "over 1 million residents." Detroit is now about 750k.

2018-07-28 06:15:02 UTC

And the rest of MI is very red.

2018-07-28 06:15:33 UTC

Jesus Christ

2018-07-28 06:15:56 UTC

that's nuts man

2018-07-28 06:16:06 UTC

Yeah, NY does similar stuff.

2018-07-28 06:16:28 UTC

Though they do tend to pass exemptions as a nod to help the rural parts

2018-07-28 06:16:38 UTC

Like they delayed the minimum wage increase in upstate.

2018-07-28 06:16:41 UTC

It seems like a lot of the country is red... and the major cities are blue

2018-07-28 06:16:44 UTC

Still hurting them though.

2018-07-28 06:16:54 UTC

That's pretty much how it works in the US.

2018-07-28 06:16:59 UTC

it honestly seems, the more I look into it. That the country is not going back to democrats

2018-07-28 06:17:03 UTC

The urban centers are deep red.

2018-07-28 06:17:09 UTC

the suburbs are traditionally republican

2018-07-28 06:17:16 UTC

And the rural areas are deep republican.

2018-07-28 06:17:38 UTC

The polling suggests the suburbs are flipping, but they'll be the kingmakers for a bit.

2018-07-28 06:18:09 UTC

It'll be very interesting over the next few years

2018-07-28 06:18:17 UTC

Alot of the Republican advantage right now comes down to the fact that the American system has always favored rural areas politically because it's harder to reach and they tend to get less representation if everything were fair.

2018-07-28 06:18:18 UTC

I'm hopefully coming to the US for uni exchange

2018-07-28 06:18:27 UTC

Which Uni?

2018-07-28 06:18:34 UTC

Kansas State I think

2018-07-28 06:18:46 UTC

was originally going to Michigan State but feed K-state is better for me

2018-07-28 06:18:48 UTC

Ah the heartlands.

2018-07-28 06:19:03 UTC

K state is a good school. It's not famous, but it's good.

2018-07-28 06:19:11 UTC

Great journalism school

2018-07-28 06:19:13 UTC

Kansas biggest weakness is that there's not much there.

2018-07-28 06:19:17 UTC

and that's what I wanted

2018-07-28 06:19:25 UTC

Sounds like a good fit then.

2018-07-28 06:19:31 UTC

I think so

2018-07-28 06:19:34 UTC

KS is a big prarie.

2018-07-28 06:19:49 UTC

Beautiful if you can take the wild weather swings and like endless flat plains.

2018-07-28 06:20:00 UTC

But it's not a place people think to just visit.

2018-07-28 06:20:13 UTC

I personally love KS. I'd live there if there was a job opportunity.

2018-07-28 06:20:29 UTC

Very friendly place where you just make your own fun.

2018-07-28 06:20:32 UTC

Wild weather swings? sounds like melbourne

2018-07-28 06:20:38 UTC

I want to go down to Texas

2018-07-28 06:20:46 UTC

maybe over to California and do some networking

2018-07-28 06:21:01 UTC

I've heard a lot of work is moving to texas from california because of taxes

2018-07-28 06:21:05 UTC

Yeah, there's no nearby bodies of water. You get cold winter snows and very hot summers.

2018-07-28 06:21:14 UTC

Yeah, and the Californians are ruining Texas.

2018-07-28 06:21:34 UTC

They bring their Californian nonsense with them and insist the locals do Californian things.

2018-07-28 06:21:46 UTC

Texas is actually a very big and diverse state.

2018-07-28 06:22:00 UTC

You should visit San Antonio, Austin and either Dallas or Houston.

2018-07-28 06:22:47 UTC

I kinda wanna go pigging in texas tbh

2018-07-28 06:22:53 UTC

I should warn, it's well into a full day driving to go from Kansas to Texas.

2018-07-28 06:22:54 UTC

gotta meet some people hahahaa

2018-07-28 06:23:01 UTC

Haha. Yep.

2018-07-28 06:23:07 UTC

I live in Australia

2018-07-28 06:23:15 UTC

it's a full day drive to get to the next major city

2018-07-28 06:23:15 UTC

TBH, you can probably go pigging and stuff in KS.

2018-07-28 06:23:29 UTC

good point ๐Ÿค”

2018-07-28 06:23:31 UTC

You'll fit right in in the Great Plains.

2018-07-28 06:23:35 UTC

I think so

2018-07-28 06:23:52 UTC

then the second six months I'll probably go to Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh

2018-07-28 06:24:19 UTC

more for networking... connects me to NY, Boston, DC, Carolinas and all that stuff

2018-07-28 06:24:45 UTC

Hm.

2018-07-28 06:25:05 UTC

I should warn networking is probably better in Eastern Pennsylvania though.

2018-07-28 06:25:20 UTC

Western Pennsylvania is rust belt and mountains.

2018-07-28 06:25:35 UTC

The plan is to live for cheapish, travel to the bigger cities where journalism is strong

2018-07-28 06:26:13 UTC

Originally I was gonna do MSU for a year and stay that side a lot... There's one upstate NY university, there's one in maine

2018-07-28 06:26:29 UTC

Which Upstate U, may I ask?

2018-07-28 06:26:45 UTC

Maine's too far away for any exciting networking, tbh.

2018-07-28 06:27:13 UTC

Iโ€™ll check hold on

2018-07-28 06:29:56 UTC

State University of New York - Stony Brook

2018-07-28 06:30:26 UTC

Itโ€™s on Long Island

2018-07-28 06:31:11 UTC

Hm. SUNY-SB. That's effectively NYC.

2018-07-28 06:31:56 UTC

I don't know too much about it personally, but Long Island is considered suburban NYC at this point.

2018-07-28 06:32:59 UTC

I do know the SUNY and CUNY systems are falling apart.

2018-07-28 06:33:21 UTC

Anyways, if you get stuck or something, feel free to message me.

2018-07-28 06:34:09 UTC

There are others

2018-07-28 06:34:22 UTC

Iโ€™m just distracted haha

2018-07-28 06:34:51 UTC

Yeah, I should get to productive stuff myself. If you need advice feel free to ask.

2018-07-28 06:35:04 UTC

just PM

2018-07-28 06:36:12 UTC

Too easy

2018-07-28 06:36:53 UTC

I would want a guise around NY Hahahaha

2018-07-28 06:37:52 UTC

Unfortunately, I'm a bit too far for that. Sorry.

2018-07-28 06:44:28 UTC

There's also UMass Amherst

2018-07-28 06:46:21 UTC

I don't know much about the UMass system.

2018-07-28 06:46:38 UTC

If it was in Boston... Iโ€™d go there no issue but ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

2018-07-28 06:46:44 UTC

Amherst is so far outta the way

2018-07-28 06:46:58 UTC

The idea for me is networking while over there

2018-07-28 06:47:11 UTC

So I need somewheee that has easy access

2018-07-28 06:47:19 UTC

Thatโ€™s why I thought Pittsburgh would be ideal

2018-07-28 06:50:15 UTC

My ultimate goal is to find work out of uni in the US so I donโ€™t have to deal with the moronic Australian media

2018-07-28 06:50:31 UTC

And thereโ€™s also nothing to do journalism wise in Australia unless youโ€™re doing crime or politics

2018-07-28 06:50:58 UTC

Hm. I should warn that the US seems to have a real glut of Journalists.

2018-07-28 06:51:42 UTC

Pittsburg probably will work. But you'll want to look into Amtrak or something.

2018-07-28 06:52:11 UTC

The big thing is to start writing. There are alternative papers in the Unis you can write for if you know where to look.

2018-07-28 06:52:25 UTC

Out of the frying pan

2018-07-28 06:54:10 UTC

Yeah Iโ€™m all over it tbh, and I know that haha but Iโ€™m confident that I will be able to stand out. The majority of โ€œjournalistsโ€ shouldnโ€™t have their jobs

2018-07-28 06:56:49 UTC

Iโ€™m gonna try look for start up companies... people with journalistic integrity. But itโ€™s gonna be a trek

2018-08-01 10:04:18 UTC

Let's kickstart a debate: Since *most* of this board tends to lean right (or atleast not progressive) there's a tactics debate right now on the right.

View 1: making fun of people is a bad idea and triggers a backlash.
https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/07/owning-liberals-feels-great-but-risks-backlash-at-polls/

View 2: Nah. No one is listening anyway. Need moar shitposts.
https://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/270858/ridicule-not-reasoned-debate-best-medicine-bruce-thornton

Which argument do you find more convincing?

2018-08-01 11:32:03 UTC

View 1, makes sense, that was what the libs did to trump supporters. Now I wouldnt say what rightwingers are doing to leftwingers are as bad but this only serves to widen the divide between the right and the left.

2018-08-01 11:33:12 UTC

If the divide is going to happen anyways might as well have fun with it.

2018-08-01 11:33:57 UTC

Which was my point. It sped up the inevitable

2018-08-01 11:36:37 UTC

But it isnt helping either

2018-08-01 11:36:57 UTC

Now we have the right stoking the fires and the left burning brighter.

2018-08-01 11:37:05 UTC

Sooner or later that fires gonna burn bad

2018-08-01 11:37:14 UTC

Or we can hope it runs out of steam
