Yeah just don't know where I am gonna put the server. I was thinking eithef my Room or the living room but I would have to ask my parents cuz i am still underage and live with them😅

2021-01-20 18:16:08 UTC

For the PC or the server?

2021-01-20 18:16:28 UTC

2021-01-20 18:18:11 UTC

nice those are reall ygood specs

2021-01-20 18:18:21 UTC

dual booting mac os?

2021-01-20 18:18:27 UTC

No KVM

2021-01-20 18:18:34 UTC

I recently got a mac os up and running via virtual box

2021-01-20 18:18:36 UTC

works really well

2021-01-20 18:18:53 UTC

I do a lot of compiling for iphone via it

2021-01-20 18:19:33 UTC

I would do that if my apartment was big enough. I already have a storage rack that I put all my computer and networking equipment that takes up a lot of room. Only place I could put a server rack would partially block my front door.

2021-01-20 18:19:33 UTC

I have been using Virtual box for a while but i wasn't really happy with it so i am gonna switch to kvm

2021-01-20 18:19:48 UTC

I definitely prefer KVM for virtualization

2021-01-20 18:20:04 UTC

i prefer virutalization strictly for the space saving

2021-01-20 18:20:10 UTC

and not needing all these boxes lying around

2021-01-20 18:22:37 UTC

I have to use multiple computers for my virtualization need because currently the only system that could run lots of virtualization is my workstation. I use that for running large VMs when I'm testing stuff for school or research but I don't want my 24/7 VMs running on it.

2021-01-20 18:23:34 UTC

yeah luckily i dont need the vm's running 24/7 so virtualization is a good option for me. I really only need to spin them up when I need to cross compile

2021-01-20 18:25:28 UTC

I probably only have five or six VMs I run 24/7. Thankfully they are pretty lightweight but there's some stuff I'd like to run 24/7 that I just don't have the compute power/RAM for.

2021-01-20 18:26:24 UTC

Actually I do have one vm I forgot about that I leave running 24/7 but in that case I just have it running on an ec2 instance 24/7

2021-01-20 18:34:07 UTC

I'm curious, why do you choose to use AWS versus one of the many alternatives like digital ocean? I like the alternatives because the price modeling is clear and simple.

2021-01-20 18:49:30 UTC

Didn’t look too heavily into it tbh. Knew aws could do what I needed so I just spun up an instance and put it on my company card. If I were paying for it Out of pocket I would definitely have looked into the price modeling more

2021-01-20 19:09:29 UTC

Anyone here in cyber security?

2021-01-20 19:11:11 UTC

IIRC David is

2021-01-20 19:35:39 UTC

I am getting my master's in cyber security

2021-01-20 19:38:21 UTC

Nice. Do you think the Comp TIA's are adequate to get started in the field? Specifically Security+.

2021-01-20 19:50:07 UTC

It's not the top cert most places are looking for but I have seen some ask for it and it's easier to get then many because it doesn't have an experience requirement. If you don't also have a degree I think it wouldn't hurt and probably help.

2021-01-20 19:55:43 UTC

shiiiit

2021-01-20 19:56:41 UTC

When I worked in the defense industry I got security+, i didn't think it was tough per se but there was an assload of info to know IMO

2021-01-20 19:57:01 UTC

both technical and non technical

2021-01-20 19:57:42 UTC

im not cyber security tho just software developer

2021-01-20 20:07:49 UTC

Security+ is always listed as one of the best certs to get, however when I've looked at job listings in the past, I see very few that mention it. Probably the top cert in the field that I've seen is CISSP, that requires three to five years if experience in the field thou.

That said, you may want to look at jobs in places you wan to work to see what they require with your experiences. I will be going into the job market in a few years with advanced degrees and publications but I'd also like to stay in my home state so if you have a larger search area you might be able to find more.

2021-01-20 20:13:54 UTC

Do you know a relatively small and soundproof rack? Shouldn't be over 250$

2021-01-20 20:16:07 UTC

I already saw some pretty good ones on ebay. Some with up to 4 CPUs with 6 cores each for a pretty good price.

2021-01-20 20:19:37 UTC

yeah the job didnt require it as a prereq, but was one they required you to get while on the job (they paid for the cert/training classes) before you were allowed into top secret clearance zones.

2021-01-20 20:20:31 UTC

His was massive it was crazy. We had to go grab it states away and then carry it up 3 flights of stairs to his apartment

2021-01-20 20:20:38 UTC

But i was thinking about buying the rack chassis and just build my own parts into it. Something like Dual Socket MoBo with 2 Octa Core Xeons, around 64gb DDR3 ECC Ram and a Consumer Corsair PSU. Just not sure how to cool that thing because of the weird construction of that case. Should I cool a Server CPU Actively or Passively?

2021-01-20 20:25:00 UTC

Wonder why they didn't sell the servers and the rack separately

2021-01-20 20:25:44 UTC

A rack like that is what I'd want. If you're going to pay and transport a server rack, might as well get a full 48U.

2021-01-20 20:25:49 UTC

I appreciate the honest response! I'm new in IT. Just got my first job in tech support but the company offers most Comp TIA courses so I'm going to study like a scholar monk lol I just want to get into an entry level job and I can move so I'm flexible there. I see so many cyber security issues and most companies seem woefully unready. Solar wind hacks really seemed to wake me up.

2021-01-20 20:27:28 UTC

Just looked it up, yeah it was a 48U. He got it super cheap like <$100 the guy was selling a bunch of them

2021-01-20 20:27:54 UTC

He bought a trailer for my truck though so it was worht it

2021-01-20 20:29:31 UTC

(for me)

2021-01-20 20:30:28 UTC

So many companies use IT and Cyber Security as the place to cut corners to stay on budget. It's also one of the reasons they love the outsource that to the cloud or people in other countries.

However, did more and more hacks and more of the industry being reliant on networked technology I see more companies taking notice. If they don't, they will be left behind.

A friend of mine pointed out that manufacturing and factories will be a hot place for cybersecurity experts in the next few years as these factories get more and more automated.

2021-01-20 20:31:13 UTC

IT always stifling me

2021-01-20 20:31:14 UTC

lol

2021-01-20 20:31:33 UTC

we're always fighting with each other

2021-01-20 22:10:13 UTC

I would also like to get Education (not sure if that's the right word) in IT because I am pretty interested in it. I have been going to IT classes in my school for 3 years now I think and I really like it, but I can't decide between IT and Customs Enforcement. I would also have the Option to do the Training for Customs Enforcement and then just learn about IT and get Education in it and then choose which one I like as my job. (sorry if some words are wrong I don't know how to paraphrase it cuz English is my third language and I am not exactly the best)

2021-01-20 22:15:13 UTC

Has anyone experience with being an Computer scientist aka. IT Guy in the military, and if yes how was it? What did you do?

2021-01-21 01:04:02 UTC

Call me old-fashioned, but

2021-01-21 01:29:04 UTC

good lord

2021-01-21 01:29:08 UTC

hate this splice

2021-01-21 01:30:44 UTC

almost always see this splice when i pick up another bike

2021-01-21 01:30:53 UTC

think it's popular with electricians

2021-01-21 01:36:20 UTC

Anyone know of any good Windows emulators for Mac that are free? PlayOnMac stopped working and I can’t find a good replacement

2021-01-21 01:53:48 UTC

Wine? thats what i used way back

2021-01-21 01:54:53 UTC

Also did you recently upgrade to Catalina or newer? those broke tons of stuff

2021-01-21 02:07:30 UTC

I know that PlayOnMac uses Wine and I can’t figure out how to use it on its own but I’ll try and figure it out
I actually downgraded my computer back to Mojave after one of my family members updated it. I used it with PlayOnMac smoothly until around 6 months ago so I know Catalina isn’t the issue

2021-01-21 02:08:54 UTC

macos up to 10.14 avialbe here

2021-01-21 02:09:10 UTC

although it is no longer updated thanks to apple basicly trashing tons of stuff they need in catalina

2021-01-21 02:17:48 UTC

im interested in the new m1 chip

2021-01-21 02:18:02 UTC

not interested in it being arm tho

2021-01-21 02:18:17 UTC

i am very impressed with it's effeciency, even with it needing to emulate x86 stuff

2021-01-21 02:18:23 UTC

ive heard

2021-01-21 02:18:29 UTC

it emulating x86 stuff

2021-01-21 02:18:33 UTC

i hope someone manages to get linux on it, not a fan of macos myself

2021-01-21 02:18:44 UTC

is sometimes faster than x86 running native

2021-01-21 02:19:02 UTC

depends on which CPU you compare it to, but yeah its really impressive

2021-01-21 02:19:20 UTC

I used to reallylike mac os

2021-01-21 02:19:31 UTC

was a pretty good multitasking os

2021-01-21 02:19:54 UTC

with the gestures but nowadays i think a lot of companies add that in

2021-01-21 02:20:00 UTC

with their touchapds

2021-01-21 02:21:55 UTC

the main problem i have with it now is apple constantly killing off support and breaking stuff, like catalina blocking 32bit apps cause apple said so

2021-01-21 02:24:01 UTC

honeslty if my wife and i didnt play video games as much i probalby would use mac os full time

2021-01-21 02:24:44 UTC

i'd do the same with linux, i run Manjaro on my laptop that i use for everything but games, which i run on a server/desktop at home

2021-01-21 02:25:28 UTC

Im in my ubuntu vm pretty much 80% of the day
