Thomas @thomas

This is a scripted message. An important announcement has just been posted in the #announcements channel. Please review it in detail and follow the instructions given. If we have not conversed recently (or since the last scripted message), give me an update on your organizing and any questions or matters I can assist with. Thank you.

Wanted to give you a heads up, but my boss just screwed me over with the December event. I submitted the time off request 2 months in advance, was approved, and am now being told the request was cancelled as we're operating under 25% staffing requirements. I am working with my boss to attempt to find a solution since he approved it before, but am being threatened with getting fired if I take it despite previous approval.

Thomas @thomas

You should really try to assert yourself. If they can overturn something done months in advance, then they can just about get away with anything.

Thomas @thomas

Call your boss's bluff. Go to the event. Stand up for yourself. If you get fired, I'll give you a free rent payment while you get a new job, which you will, and it will be better.

Thomas @thomas

Otherwise, it will reflect poorly on your general commitment. You have been stuck in this dead end job too afraid to make a leap to something better for way too long. It's time to not be treated like an animal and do something because you believe in it.

Thomas @thomas

There's a lot of very negative reactions coming to people who are backing out last minute to this event. People all over the country have been giving countless hours and sacrifices to make this a reality. It's rightfully perceived as an insult to all those who have given something to ensure this accomplishment.

Such an event has not occurred in 18 months. One day, for 18 months. The rest I leave to you.

Wilson TX @PF-988985

I am aware of how important this event is, and my boss pulling this stunt has pissed me off as I've been eagerly looking forward to go and have since been actively applying for new jobs since. I believe I have found one, and was intending on having my interview for it tomorrow morning as they want someone to start asap. I am also talking with Logan TX to gather advice with what I do know and what sort of experience/education I need to move into a more productive career in IT.

I'd like to schedule a Mumble call with you to further iron out moving forward, as I don't like committing to an event only to have to break said commitment.

Thomas @thomas

If you have a new job lined up, then tell them you can interview and/or start on Monday and tell your boss that you're very sorry but you have to take the weekend. Go to the event, get the new job, make more money, continue to develop your health, finally break out of this slum you've been in.

This is a scripted message. Please make sure to review the recent announcement. Thank you.

Thomas, I'm aware I'm not in the best of standing, but I do have extensive IT knowledge from which I've gained through personal venture, and would like to contribute my skills to the organizations cause to improve infrastructure and reliability, while also improving my skills through learning and experience. Not to mention I have a fair amount of infrastructure myself in which can be used to test ideas and even potentially securely host services itself. In terms of finding a new job, I've discovered an opportunity for an paid apprenticeship within IT which I will be attending this upcoming December 22nd, and includes on the spot interviews.

Thomas @thomas

Message @Vincent TX on that.

Remember, your primary goal in the org is still weight loss and getting your ducks in a row as far as lifestyle. The rest doesn't mean a thing if you can't march.

Wilson TX @PF-988985

Absolutely, the weight I've gained is not beneficial in any way. I believe a good part of my mental struggle tho is due to feeling as if I'm lost in the sense of what my skills are, and thus the desire to utilize what I do know for the org. I know being a security officer is not what I want to do, and I took it due to my injuries, and eventually as a way to work on a business of my own. However, I strongly believe I'm burnt out on trying to build my own community into something more, and need time to step away and exercise what I've learned in a more organized structure vs being the sole decision maker to help regain my confidence in skills I already have.

Thomas @thomas

Your best skill for right now should be survival. Being out of shape is bad enough on its own, but paired with a mental apathy it's a death sentence. People like that die when they're 30 and don't get buried until they're 70.

Eat better (and less), run more, lift more, lose weight, feel better about yourself, get a new and better job, attend more events, read some books, cut out media you don't need (video games, youtube, whatever), and you can grow into the organization with skills you pick up.
