Well it's like, I have relatives with quite racist beliefs, but they treat everyone nicely regardless

Regardless of a belief that is founded in prejudice and assumption, they still treat people nicely
I think a lot of it is people confusing racism with disagreeable actions taken based on one's belief in it.
You can be racist and not act on those beliefs, yeah
or even act in "positive" ways based on them.
I think the act of merging the terms together is very similar to racism itself.
A merging of general expectations into each instance.
