Mail is a public service that should be provided to everyone regardless of where they are. Private companies simply cannot do that and RM has failed already to do that and you think that s stupid argument lmao

2020-03-19 12:04:26 UTC

it just shows how little you are aware of how things work at national scales

2020-03-19 12:04:34 UTC

Rail? close it down

2020-03-19 12:04:34 UTC

the logistics involved to provide the service

2020-03-19 12:04:50 UTC

I'd like to see rail used more for freight

2020-03-19 12:05:03 UTC

ANd not for rich londoners to fuck up rural economies

2020-03-19 12:05:08 UTC

so you want some 40 million people to travel bu cars ?

2020-03-19 12:05:43 UTC

I want the rail network to be self-sustaining and not subsidised by car drivers, most of which are significantly poorer than those using the rail they're subsidising

2020-03-19 12:06:05 UTC

If you -must- subsidise rail, and I don't think we should, then pay for it out of general taxation

2020-03-19 12:06:28 UTC

You want the rails to close down, so can you tell me what will the alternative be?

2020-03-19 12:06:41 UTC

<:pepelaugh:544857300179877898>

2020-03-19 12:07:42 UTC

Why would it close down?

2020-03-19 12:07:52 UTC

@Eccles

2020-03-19 12:08:09 UTC

Remove the subsidies (prices go up) or push the cost of the subsidies from cars to general tadxation

2020-03-19 12:08:37 UTC

Stop being a leftist 🙂 I'm establishing preference

2020-03-19 12:08:55 UTC

If the options were "fund rail off the back of impoverished car drivers" and "shut it down", then shut it the fuck down

2020-03-19 12:08:58 UTC

how are rails subsidised by car drivers?

2020-03-19 12:09:18 UTC

the tax revenue from car drivers pays for the entire road network multiple times over

2020-03-19 12:09:39 UTC

do you have a source for that

2020-03-19 12:09:45 UTC

yes, ONS

2020-03-19 12:10:06 UTC

the tax revenue from drivers is more than the entire Department of Transport budget

2020-03-19 12:10:16 UTC

QED

2020-03-19 12:11:49 UTC

can you link me that interesting study? Im quite interested to see how vehicle tax goes to rails

2020-03-19 12:12:30 UTC

don't be flippant, the figures are what the figures are

2020-03-19 12:13:11 UTC

Im not, in fact I asked you for the source

2020-03-19 12:13:13 UTC

Or are you one of these peoples who needs a peer-reviewed study from a publication approved by your ideology to know where your arsehole is?

2020-03-19 12:13:30 UTC

And I told you - the ONS has all the government spending and revenue figures available on their website

2020-03-19 12:13:41 UTC

No i just need the source from where you are making this claim and the fact that you'd rather go the ad hominem way just shows that you don't know it

2020-03-19 12:13:59 UTC

does it?

2020-03-19 12:14:06 UTC

got a source?

2020-03-19 12:14:07 UTC

Because the tax from vehicles goes towards infrastructure costs

2020-03-19 12:14:17 UTC

yeah i do

2020-03-19 12:14:24 UTC

OBR

2020-03-19 12:14:40 UTC

i'm supposed to be working. i'll let wladfa/wacka find the figures for you

2020-03-19 12:14:47 UTC

sure

2020-03-19 12:14:53 UTC

You want to find spending on rail subsidies and the road network - both will be in the DoT spending

2020-03-19 12:15:06 UTC

You should also take some time out to find out how taxation works and not just assume dumb things like it all goes to rails

2020-03-19 12:15:11 UTC

You'll then want fuel duty, vehicle excise duty, and VAT share from fuel sales

2020-03-19 12:15:57 UTC

"it goes to" is not relevent here
