Right, so you tend to end up with individuals of a species that are very similiar to each other, rather than incredibly different. Without many major changes, they tend to gravitate towards the center of a particular population. Hence why they tend to be closer to each other. Humans just as recently as 70,000 years ago had a pretty tight bottleneck, so our DNA is pretty close to each other just from that, let alone the tendency for a species to homogenize
