Roma Total War 1 was the best though. Nothing beats having greek mercenary hoplites block a bridge with heavy infantry behind, a horde of archers and some cavalry to guard the shallow parts of the river

Once they get on the bridge you just toothpaste squeeze the enemy with the cavalry
