They were built around lowest common denominator players and they figured numbers = esports

StarCraft 2 is built around comp play and esports

imo they always failed to make OW entertaining, the only reason it got so far was the characters and marketting

They explicitly wanted that crowd and grew the game in that direction over multiple iterations

and SC2 is getting beat by GTA 5 streaming 😛
