From what I read, they had a lawyer and he made the deal that if they cooperated that they would not be charged. I believe they are Nigerian nationals. So they probably used that as leverage since a criminal conviction could see them on the first plane back to Lagos.

@Ethreen42 That's the whole idea behind amnesty. Romney won Texas by about 1 million votes. There are estimated 5 million illegals living in Texas. If they get amnesty they'll vote 8-2 for democrats and the dems will win the white house on the bases of 3 states for the next 60 years.

2019-02-17 07:14:30 UTC

how are dems an active presence in a state where everybody owns a gun and refuse to hand them over

2019-02-17 07:20:15 UTC

Look at the breakdown by county

@FunnyStarRunner Like in most states Democrats dominate the urban areas of Houston and Dallas and Republicans dominate the rest of the state. This is true all over the U.S. Trump won Ohio because the Dems failed to get 80% percent of cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus.

2019-02-17 07:37:54 UTC

does explain why a lot of city liberals attempt to dismiss GOP supporters as toothless country bumpkins

2019-02-17 07:41:25 UTC

https://www.politico.com/2016-election/results/map/president/ohio/ Click on those blue counties and look at them. Franklin Co is where Columbus is. Athens Co is where the University is. Summit and Cuyahoga Cos are Cleveland, Hamilton Co is Cincinnati.

2019-02-17 07:50:53 UTC

@FunnyStarRunner That's easy to explain. I've talked to my in-laws a lot, and they are upper middle class parents with two kids, and a nice house in Seattle. They are lovely people, and I really care for them, but they have this funny idea that anyone can do anything if they just put their mind to it, and it doesn't matter where you come from. They don't know the reality of being poor, the fact that there are less options, less opportunity, and the whole idea that someone would be stuck in that situation because there is no way out is just anethma to them. I made it out because I had friends willing to help me. Others aren't so lucky. They said you have to do what you have to do even if it's uncomfortable and don't understand that that kind of decision when you have nothing can lead you to sleeping on the streets, and possibly being stuck there. They have no consept of any of it becaue they only know the people around them that have managed to pull themselves out of it and make something of their lives. It's been interesting having conversations with them about these things, especially since I was homeless, I did get a divorce and was a single parent household for a long time, and I did work my butt off to get out of poverty.... but none of it would have been possibel without help from people who believed in me. Not everyone has that help.

Really, it's a difference in mindset. People think differently in the country then they do in the city. Different experiences, different states of being.

2019-02-17 08:00:19 UTC

i grew up middle class and the closest my family was to homeless was the period when we lived at my grandparents' house

2019-02-17 08:00:36 UTC

i think it was a transition between homes

2019-02-17 08:00:53 UTC

@lelula Jordan Peterson has talked about this. The hierarchies we have in this country rewards competence. But as hierarchies continue they tend to grow steeper such that wealth is concentrated in fewer people at the top and a large number of people stack up at the bottom. Eventually, you get so many people at the bottom that there is no opportunity for them to rise within the hierarchy. Think about that urban kid that got a crappy education that didn't prepare him even to work at McDonalds. Then add that there are no jobs even at McDonalds because there are too many people more qualified than him. He's stuck at Zero. He can't even participate in the game of getting a job and rising with his abilities. We need to do something about that. The RICH need to be concerned with this. Because when too many people are at Zero that is when the system collapses. There needs to be a concerted effort by the private sector to go into these urban areas and build businesses and factories to create jobs to give people a chance to get on the ladder. Right now those entry level manufacturing jobs are all being shipped overseas. It's not good.

2019-02-17 08:03:12 UTC

There is a roll for gov't too. They need to make it attractive for businesses to invest in cities and they need to FIX THE DAMN EDUCATION system by whatever means necessary even if it means privatization since spending 12 years in school and not being able to read the instructions on a fryer or other piece of machinery is unacceptable.

2019-02-17 08:28:13 UTC

@CasualSailor I agree with you (and JP) but there isn't much insentive for businesses to go into those inner city areas and build jobs if theyare being burned down by protesters, robbed, or denied entry because someone new big shot in congress doesn't know how math works. Ecomics have so many parts, and even the experts don't know exactly what causes everything everywhere, but one thing is for sure.... if people won't fight for their own well being then others won't either .

Tariq Nasheed is coming out against Smollet

2019-02-17 08:30:23 UTC

which is weird

2019-02-17 08:35:21 UTC

like he's arguing that the Smollet hoax was a deliberate attempt by LGBT people to advance themselves at the expense of black people?
