The moon has to be visible to half the earth and look the same to everyone who can see it, because that is observably what the moon does. A spherical moon orbiting a spherical earth is the ONLY way the moon could do this.

If you were to get two spheres and have one go around the other (doesn’t matter how), and you were to stand on the surface of the larger sphere, the smaller sphere would behave EXACTLY like the moon does in our night sky. We could even do this with a computer model
