Turkey wants to join the EU, but no-one in the EU wants Turkey in. The majority of EU countries are in NATO as well. Turkey has a reason to hate EU, and also a reason to hate NATO - with the rise of Erdogan, Turkey has changed its policies and went full expansionist, hence threatening Greece and Cyprus; but NATO obviously supported Greece and Cyprus.

So basically what Erdogan wants, is the control of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, which is currently divided by Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Unfortunately for him, his petty country controls a very small part of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, and he wants to control a bigger one, to get the oil that it has under its waters. But NATO and the EU just won't allow that.

Thus, Turkey got advantage of the situation going on in Syria and the millions of refugees that they host, and started sending huge amounts of refugees, by sea, to the Greek Isles in the Aegean, in order to create socioeconomic instability.

But since this push didn't persuade the EU and NATO to do Turkey's bidding, Erdogan got closer with Putin, and that's what triggered the West the most. But Erdogan hasn't realized that Putin dislikes both his petty country and the West. So he acts like a friend of Erdogan's, to trigger the West, and opposes him in Syria, to trigger him as well. So the Mastermind of this situation, the one who's actually pulling the strings is Putin.

So basically Turkey wants to be in NATO and the EU, but they currently dislike being in it, because these two alliances won't do Turkey's bidding. And Turkey won't leave NATO, because without it, it will be doomed both socioeconomically and militaristically.
