He did say he was a “ great general “ which is objectively true, but it was in the context of praising his rival, Ulysses S. Grant. The media attempted to spin his comments as support for the confederacy with articles like this, and deceptively edited videos.

see, some white people really don't appreciate their actual heritage, so they try to fake being exotic by choosing some vague, distant ancestry to some other ethnic group, particularly indians, and try to make themselves look special that way
due to the Cherokee's long history of inter-mixing with whites, it's easy for some lily-white idiot to say "oh, I'm 1/32nd Cherokee, I'm more special than the rest of you."
