What's cheap about it? They want to maximize profits, this is an easy way to make people more comfortable about using their service by visibly distancing themselves from fringe politics. It's a business decision, no ideology

Facebook's stock has been having a rough time. They have an image problem. Since the revelations that facebook has been selling data and been infiltrated by bots from tons of different locations, people don't fuck with facebook as much.

Getting articles written about them saying they remove fringe pages that promote hate speech (even if that's untrue the articles will be written) they get some image back.
