In my mind, an elder deserving of respect, is one who does not ask for it based upon age.

Respect is given, until it is not earned. You should respect others until given reasons not too.

I've always hated the "Give me respect first" mentality.

It's not just India or Islam, though. People use that "respect your elders" shit in Canada, too.
