Because it improves the sites standing to be delivering mostly new content. It improves linkbacks,, and that means new content that is upvoted more. People then start to subscribe to the site instead of thinking of it as a backup or archive of the Reddit

This upsets me. The Samaritans were a really good non-biased charity.

That's sad. I went through the training but didn't quite make the grade. The main issue is if you don't want to talk, the Samaritans really can't help. They aren't an advice line.
