Actually I believe the origin of giving cheers was started by the ancient greeks . They would give cheers as respect to their gods and drink to good health. I acutally just read about that in the last week or so
that's why they always raise their glasses up

@Mystery Lady Must have multiple histories from different culture for different reasons. the putting the glass down to the table is an indication of drinking for the fallen friends and family.
