It cant be "proven", but there is a lot of evidence to suggest that animals have complex emotions and some have complex social interactions and awareness of self as well.

It's a big philosophical problem.
Horses are one of few creatures that match human endurance levels. To have that on my side with the power of the human mind.
sentience is definded as being able to percieve your surroundings. Sapience is defined as being aware of yourself.
