That said its as stupid as us using a rifled gun for so long anyway when smoothbore and FS became the standard for NATO nations years back, and has proven to be superior
But once again we are only just coming out of the "We will have to fight off hordes of USSR tanks in defensive positions" mindset. Shit, look at WW2 and how long it took us to admit the Cruiser concept of "speed is armour" was shit and actually make a good medium tank, or shit, to admit that the 2pdr was actually useless and upgrade our tanks to the 6pdr.
It comes down to it we get our stuff done but we take ages to do it, or to even admit it needs doing in the first place.
It's a weird peculiarity in British thinking
I've noticed it everywhere
You guys shitcanned jet aircraft until the 262 started raping stuff
It took ages for the RN to get up to current design standards
And the aircraft, my god.
Even so America still has the lead on us
*Especially* in ground attack aircraft - who else has put a howitzer and an actual broadside onto an aerial platform?
Ehh, US aircraft peaked in the Cold War and have gone well downhill since "stealth is life" meme became IRL
as an american all I can say is *I love big booms*
deadass I want a p51 with a 40mm
To be fair we have less than three dozen Gunships.
They are too specialized as tools to procure in large numbers.
Yes, but aircraft are supposed to go head on towards the target, *not swing around and engage it with a full broadside*
Its like napoleonic naval strategy's *but flying*
Also stealth is kind of good with all the advances in targetting tech we have these days, it gives you a better chance of getting to your target
I mean not really.
Stealth has to be tailored to a specific band
And it only really works for single emitters
Which is a problem when you have SAM systems that use multiple emitter systems that themselves each use variable band radar
Then you have infrared all-aspect, which are effectively impossible to spoof anymore.
You have to either dodge them, outrun them, or shoot them down. The last one is the only feasible option when the missile is rated for Mach 3.5 at 9g continuous.
Ah
I thought Stealth tech was a blanket all thing, thats actually pretty interesting that it only has specific bands it can hit.
Well technically you can stealth for any given band. But only a handful are used (or generally useful), and X is by far the most common. Fun little fact, the Germans invented K band radar. However, in typical Teutonic fashion, K band also happens to be the exact absorption frequency of water. So when they turned it on, all the transmitter power was effectively microwaving the air humidity. In effect, the Germans made a swamp-ass beam that would cause an area to become muggy and horrible.
That is actually really cool
Actually, can you imagine weaponizing it? You could inflict some nasty damage to your enemies morale by essentially stifling there forces for days on end.
That would be the absolute worst.
A directed K-band emitter with a modulation that causes it to drop from slightly above K-band to K-band in the target area.
Directed swamp-ass ray
*Hanz, prepare ze Florida ray!*
Project Florida
Oh gods im dying
Why are humans so obsessed with weaponized forms of light wave?
What is wrong with us?
I mean you can weaponize the electron gun in a CRT monitor
Lasers, microwaves, Gamma and X-rays have all been proposed for weapons.
I just think it's funny that the first thought humans had when we started to master the EM spectrum was "So how can this fuck some asshole up?"
