5.56 is being used in guns with a 14-16in barrel when it was literally designed for 20in barrels, and based on the WWII design of the assault rifle for engagements within a 200-300m envelope

Despite modern engagements being well in to the 800m range

The M16 was fine and the m4 is bad

And still adequate Rofl. In addition, the AR-15 is one of the easier rifles to rechamber for new rounds. Everything from .22 LR to .50BMG and 20mm uppers for AR-15s exist.
