@Reichtangle when the Italians made their first smokeless powder (Alfred Nobel's Ballistite) they used pasta making machines to process the explosive paste into standardized pellets

Well to make gunpowder involves drying a wet explosive paste, cutting it into sheets (pasta), cutting the sheets unto strips (pasta), cutting the strips into flakes (pastry dough) and extruding the flakes into threads (pasta) before cutting them into little filaments
Also that little tube has really good surface area as compared to a normal pellet
It's a hollow cylinder as opposed to a normal cyulinder
6.5 carcano was a good Cartridge through WW1, but they got stuck in the middle of transition in WW2 and ended up using it even after it was well obsolete
Actually the point of the tube is to have less surface area
The goal is to burn at a slow rate on ignition and then progressively faster so the highest pressure occurs when the bullet is already moving down the barrel
