Gen IV reactors are basically all built around activated thorium fuel

as far as Ive heard thorium reactors have an even lower chance of meltdown, if not being incapable of meltdown

Most Gen IVs can also eat up nuclear waste as fuel

Yeah it's down to the design and not the fuel

Gen III is in full supercriticality at all times, and you moderate it with an active system of neutron poison rods

Gen IV reactors are on supercritical when they're in their active cycle

And the shutdown/SCRAM is hours/minutes instead of days.

They're like a better version of the Russian fast-neutron lead-bismuth eutectic reactors, except they don't "freeze" when idling.
