In 1984, the Reagan administration, which had significantly expanded the CIA-run program of funding the Jihadi militants in Afghanistan, employed the term "war against terrorism" to pass legislation aimed at countering terrorist groups in the wake of the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing that killed 241 U.S. and 58 French peacekeepers.[73] In 2017, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence called the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing "the opening salvo in a war that we have waged ever since—the global war on terror."[74]
Ah that's why
So yeah, GWOT isn't a good term. But, basically, the first fuckwits from the 80s and 90s. So, Kuwait.
I'm sure some soldiers would say the same about fellow vietnam vets when they came back
Gulf War
That's the term I was missing
I have no issue with Nam vets.
Nam vets were in some real shit
Gulf war guys never really fired a shot in anger
It was all pilots.
That's why the Vietnam comparision doesn't work
Fuck fighting asians, fuck fighting in asian countries, fuck fighting in jungles
Post Korea war (armistice technically,) DMZ guards were in more danger than Gulf War vets
lol
Hey, my Uncle was a Korea vet. He also guarded the DMZ post armistice. They had dudes get nabbed and drug over the border every other month for the first few years.
Norks didn't play games
Still don't, tbh
Look up the tree incident if you don't believe me.
Anyways, one of the best veterans I know is a Gulf War vet, actually two em.
One is my history/philosophy professor, a Chief Petty Officer. He got combat in the Gulf War, and jokes he didn't get a purple heart on his ship cause he knew how to duck. The other was my veteran officer at my college, he was NCIS and went undercover to investigate and root out terror groups in ME during the Gulf War and I think he did time in Iraq too.
That being said, a lot of em were absolute bastards to Iraq and Afganistan vets because it was the war they trained for and didn't get. I don't know if that makes sense with the way I am wording it. @MAC21500
jelly vets
Likewise we see this behavior in Obama era NCOs and lower infantry who never got to deploy once.
So basically GW vets are salty they didn't get real action
Who are absolute bastards cause they didn't get jack shit - exactly so. ^
All the guys I know who got major action quit wishing for it, I know that's a trope but, still.
It explains how Runes is depleted.
I mean if you want action you can be a Marine grunt and get shoved in to the worst of the shit, ot a Coastie so you can get shot at by cartel smugglers every other day.
it's different
Yeah USCG is no joke, even in peace.
HST vs DOD
Anyways not to ramble, I know I sound like a hypocrite so I'm just trying to clarify.
Basically I left the U.S and had my world view burst by veterans all over Europe and other nations about how disgustingly we behave. I have to point this out because someone will go full retard otherwise and ping me, since I'm doing the one patch for a veteran charity and rush to call me a hypocrite.
Actually now I'm interested
I don't even know if this counts as /k/ or politics
Becasue I think we've talked about this before
They overlap
We have, with the Icelandic incident.
Yep
More of which is in the URS discord btw if you scroll up.
I told Runes about that, he just went "Fucking Marine corps as usual"
