Some 40 years ago in deep philisophical discussions we would indicate that "Birds are birds."
I think for these people, it means they will not change. They are corn, and will stay corn no matter what happens to them. They are corn in the field, and on the stalk, and even when popped, nothing changes them. They are not like us.
They do not learn.
