so, I think the Marines, are quite literally, battling amphibious creatures. Frog demons.
The dragon, beast, and earth-beast are an unholy trinity who send out demonic spirits. These spirits resemble frogs and remind the reader of the plague of frogs that invaded Egypt before the exodus. Frog demon article
The frog demon comes in quietly without a herald. He is a stealth creature who does nothing to signal his presence. He immediately begins to hypnotize or cast a spell upon his victim by taking over the subconscious. He proceeds to enslave his victim, suck up his energy, and fill him with darkness. He is detectable because he makes the person tired. If the person sits down and closes his eyes to rest, the demon will put him to sleep, but the sleep will be awful. The demon drains a person's energy, both mental and physical.
