Quite simply, because respecting rights to life and property is necessary for civilization. In other words, I'm a fan of safe drinking water, having food to eat, and using electricity. That's not to see they have inherent sanctity, as governments have taken those rights many times.

sacred just means that something is worthy of reverence

we curently live in a multi-culutral west where everything is equal and so nothing is worthy of reverence

Humans have the option to make constructive or destructive choices. It doesn't really matter how people justify their decisions, because constructive choices lead to success and destructive choices lead to failure.
