<@238447399951925249> My follow-up was to separate taxes as a civic duty from taxes as a safety mechanism and how offloading the mechanism onto others does not teach people who are destitute, even by “no fault of their own” (which is a vanishingly small portion of the poor, by the way), the value of money or their circumstance and very rarely actually helps them.

Paying for agreed-upon utilities and purposes isn’t the same as forcing someone to also pay for mistakes they did not make or circumstances they also don’t control, so if it’s truly no fault of the individual in poverty, requiring others to support them only multiplies the effect across others. Builds resentment, encourages class stratification, discourages active charity.
