Precious metals are inflation proof. They preserve wealth, they don't usually grow in value. But they'll still be worth what they were in the past (you'll just get more of the inflated currency for it).

In a technological world I understand why it has value.

I suppose it has industrial applications as well.

Even solar panels often include silver in their makeup, the only better conductor of electricity is gold
