The underlying issue is the need for validation - for someone to say "you're a worthwhile man who is sexually/socially viable"... For a time we all rely on others in childhood, but few men go on a rite of passage and find that they are profoundly and truly alone, and that the best validation comes from physical reality and not mother-figures.
