Why do we grade classes that don't make sense to be graded?

2020-01-10 12:47:00 UTC

That's another thing, teachers just shuffling bad students through to graduation to avoid dealing with them

2020-01-10 12:47:14 UTC

Yeah, although I'd argue that's a good thing.

2020-01-10 12:47:18 UTC

Those teachers see through the shit system.

2020-01-10 12:48:36 UTC

And it's not only that

2020-01-10 12:49:02 UTC

The way teachers teach is also really bad, because children have different approaches, or different interests at different times.

2020-01-10 12:49:22 UTC

And the standardized teaching methods ignore all that, leaving many children with great potential behind.

2020-01-10 12:49:32 UTC

one thing I always assumed about school is the social enviroment that is school doesn't really apply anywhere else.

2020-01-10 12:49:45 UTC

Yeah, not anymore.

2020-01-10 12:49:51 UTC

did it ever?

2020-01-10 12:49:52 UTC

It used to during the time of factory work.

2020-01-10 12:50:09 UTC

Public schools have been remade into a purpose built system for girls

2020-01-10 12:50:16 UTC

like even in factories is the school enviroment really what you can expect form your coworkers?

2020-01-10 12:50:23 UTC

Schools were literally modelled after factory work, and that worked so long as factories employed a ton of people.

2020-01-10 12:50:53 UTC

Nowadays people have more options in work life, but public education is still as rigid as ever.

2020-01-10 12:51:05 UTC

"how do girls learn better" is the only question they ask. Completely ignoring that boys learn differently

2020-01-10 12:51:11 UTC

Yeah.

2020-01-10 12:51:14 UTC

that much i do know, the public school system was built to get people ready for the factory work.

2020-01-10 12:51:23 UTC

I'm actually arguing for a separation of genders in schools.

2020-01-10 12:51:43 UTC

I would just start with separation of learning styles.

2020-01-10 12:51:52 UTC

Yeah and learning speed

2020-01-10 12:52:01 UTC

Bespoke education

2020-01-10 12:52:08 UTC

My niece goes to a school where the classes overlap, depending on the learning speed of the children.

2020-01-10 12:52:26 UTC

totaly, stop gradeing kids based on their age and start dealing with the fact that some kids just don't learn as fast.

2020-01-10 12:52:35 UTC

It's absolutely awesome, the children get to skip ahead or lag behind basically at will.

2020-01-10 12:52:49 UTC

Exactly as their interests desire and their skills allow.

2020-01-10 12:52:57 UTC

yup yup

2020-01-10 12:53:08 UTC

and again, get the kids some shop clases!

2020-01-10 12:53:14 UTC

let them build and fix things!

2020-01-10 12:53:16 UTC

Sounds like a good system, good for your niece

2020-01-10 12:53:30 UTC

It's brilliant, I'm so happy to see how she's being raised

2020-01-10 12:53:35 UTC

I hope that generation of kids will bring change

2020-01-10 12:54:00 UTC

My nephews 3, and I'm worried about his education

2020-01-10 12:54:21 UTC

Do you live in a big city?

2020-01-10 12:54:22 UTC

Because blue state

2020-01-10 12:54:29 UTC

Middling city

2020-01-10 12:54:36 UTC

Couple hundred thousand

2020-01-10 12:54:49 UTC

"middling" lol

2020-01-10 12:54:53 UTC

For me that's a lot 😄

2020-01-10 12:55:03 UTC

For America, fairly small

2020-01-10 12:55:36 UTC

i'm worried about my 8 year old cousin, smart little kid, everyone says he is just like i was at that age.
I'm worried that school will crush him.
he is loud and can't for the life of him hold still, I can't imagine teachers will like him much but he is also smart and learns fast.
