by subtly altering EQ you can simulate the way the shape of ear alters sound if its coming from behind you
which tricks ur brain into thinking a sound is behind you
very popular in video games rnn
its such a subtle yet important feature in competitive FPS

oh and also by creating delays between the left and right speaker on your headphone
changes the perceived direction of approach
if the same sound comes a couple ms later in the left ear it will sound like its coming from the right
