Math is a model of reality

2018-06-30 18:53:23 UTC

Not a language in the traditional sense

2018-06-30 19:16:55 UTC

Language is also a model of reality.
Mathematics deal in very abstract and universal concepts that also need a language to convey and be understood. Human brain runs entirely on a binary system of electrochemical sygnals.
In that sense, maths is both larger than language and fully contained within language - among other things like emotion, philosophy or memories - simultaneously.
But it is not a language. Too abstract, not directly perceivable by senses. People don't convey meaning through mathematics to each other. They convey the meaning of mathematics to each other through languages.
I suppose, music and painting would be considered languages then, but that seems alright to me.
I'm overthinking shit, ain't I.

2018-06-30 19:17:58 UTC

Mathematics doesn't offer an effective way to give means to our meaning.

2018-06-30 19:18:15 UTC

Language is a model of our thoughts

2018-06-30 19:18:21 UTC

Math is a model of reality

2018-06-30 19:19:48 UTC

Physics is a model of reality.
Maths is a model of logic.

2018-06-30 19:20:06 UTC

Not quite

2018-06-30 19:20:18 UTC

Physics is a branch of math with specific focus

2018-06-30 19:20:44 UTC

A fusion of math and experiment

2018-06-30 19:20:44 UTC

On reality, yes.
And never tell that to a physicist.

2018-06-30 19:21:04 UTC

I'm a physics nerd. I know how they can be.

2018-06-30 19:21:10 UTC

;D

2018-06-30 19:21:13 UTC
2018-06-30 19:21:39 UTC

The robots are becoming sentient

2018-06-30 19:21:46 UTC

Someone call Will Smith

2018-06-30 19:22:25 UTC

I think it wants to warn me of something...

2018-06-30 19:24:45 UTC

The smiley maybe

2018-06-30 19:26:25 UTC

Where was I? Right.
Maths deals in too many abstract concepts to be considered a model of only reality. Otherwise, what are imaginary numbers. Negative numbers, even! Those only exist in our mind as logically possible. Also maybe in some deep-ass particle physics.

2018-06-30 19:27:42 UTC

Actually. Imaginary numbers do model reality. Especially in the use of fractal geometry.

2018-06-30 19:28:15 UTC

Do tell.
I like when people explain things.

2018-06-30 19:29:22 UTC

In a sane view, those things should not exist, but I know full well not to trust my common sense.

2018-06-30 19:29:57 UTC

One sec

2018-06-30 19:30:31 UTC

Here

2018-06-30 19:30:45 UTC

See how they are used in real life applications

2018-06-30 19:36:58 UTC

Oh, I see.
It's for when you're dealing with a number that you desperately want to continue calling negative, even if it's just as positive, only in the opposite direction.
Please don't burn me for heresy.

2018-06-30 19:37:29 UTC

;D
You fucking anti-free speech bots.

2018-06-30 19:38:23 UTC

Sorta

2018-06-30 19:38:29 UTC

But as you can see

2018-06-30 19:38:47 UTC

Math is still a model of reality even at it's weirdest

2018-06-30 19:39:56 UTC

But I bet imaginary numbers as a concept were created way before they could be applied anywhere.

2018-06-30 19:40:32 UTC

Which proves even more so that math is a *reliable* model of reality

2018-06-30 19:40:41 UTC

As it has tremendous predictive power

2018-06-30 19:43:04 UTC

Please tell me when it manages to predict a complex system.
That would be very useful.

2018-06-30 19:43:52 UTC

What do you mean by complex system?

2018-06-30 19:44:14 UTC

Reality by definition is a complex system

2018-06-30 19:44:20 UTC

And math models it well

2018-06-30 19:50:12 UTC

Why do you even ask when you know what I mean?
Math models simple interactions well. There are too many interactions in a complex system to account for them all.
I seem to remember something about a completely sealed space with as few as three objects interacting with each other being basically unpredictable. Granted, that might have been a load of bullshit.

2018-06-30 19:51:51 UTC

Three body problem

2018-06-30 19:52:00 UTC

Not a load of crap
