The whole point of Free Software is that you're free to openly modify and distribute the software as you wish.
That's all that means. You can have software that's Open Source but not Free.
All Open Source means is that you have access to the Source Code, but you are not free to distribute or modify as you need it.
I do think that the Open Source community did undermine the Free Software movement.

I'm not even a communist. I'm staunchly in favor of capitalism.
I actually think that catering to the premise of Intellectual Property, which is what the Open Source movement did, is very anti-capitalist.
Because Software Companies base their business model on the premise that you could treat Software as a physical good, which you can't.
These companies base their model on selling products that can effectively be infinitely reproduced by anybody. Which is insane.
That's an objectively terrible business model.
So, why are we using legislation and licensing to facilitate what is objectively a terrible business model?
I agree Stallman and the Free software is full of dumb communist hippies that think that the Free Software movement will usher in a communist utopia where hobbyists just make whatever software they want, and evil corporations won't make shitty proprietary software.
But that doesn't mean I don't agree with the Free Software philosophy coming from capitalist principles. I think that giving corporations the sole proprietorship to modify and distribute software stifles what should by all means should be freely and openly distributed.
Here's linus talking about why he underminded the FSF

notes: Open Source does not mean corporations have ' proprietorship to modify and distribute software' --i don't know where you heard that
Free Software movement does not give you more access to distribute code overall. You have to familiarize yourself with all the available licensing schemes. Many things called Free Software as in freedom, are actually less permissive. It's not free source code, you owe them back any changes.
Whereas with MIT license essentially all you owe them is to not remove their copyright from the original code or pretend you wrote it
The GPL3 is more than anything a license to protect the original author, and a set of rules and procedures you must follow in order to use his code
The problem with the Tivoization clause is that rather than just enforce compliance with the license, it now restricts you into the sort of product you will be allowed to release. You cant add any hardware barrier to a preconfigured linux tvbox/kiosk/etc. that keeps me from installing my own software such as a linux desktop distribution and using it as a cheap PC. It might be best to let me do this, but tbh it adds extra liabilities
Such as you buy a little tv streaming box that runs its UI on linux, and then your spergy little hacker son uses it to boot into a linux desktop and watch PornHub at 7fps.
Parents have no way of preconcieving that this would be possible with the right knowhow. Now you have a lawsuit on your hands
GPL3 is also known as viral -- they dont just want your changes, they want your full project if it uses any GPL code. Actually half the crowd disagrees on this and half attempts to verbally enforce it. So half the people using GPL3 dont even understand it
Disclaimer: I used to thronk GPL3 was a chill guy, now i'm just kinda stuck on it cause i like hacking GZDOOM src
a lot of businesses have zero-GPL policies, not even for output.
Is GZDoom still the most popular source port?
I've lost track, because there was just this point in time where you'd have a source port of the week.
ya Zdoom is no longer in dev
GZDoom is the best and most maintained and versatile modern source port
Chocolate Doom is still the best port for barebones-authenticity of the original games, and GZDoom is the best for heavy modding/hacking
although arguably for Boom-compatible mods, PRBoom+ will have much faster performance in OpenGL than GZDoom
I just want a legit source port of Blood. That's all I want.
how about a java port of blood <:pepe_smug:378719408341909506>
dont hold your breath of a source port of blood, as irr they have lost the code
that mod was a reverse engineered port the actual code is part mia
the fact that the build engine is open source did help them alot
did you know Build2 is out?
nope
BloodGDX is super
