Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Maybe he's rejecting that servitude should be allowed as a punishment for a crime?
I'd have to see his tweets in context.
It looks to me as though he may be mistaken about what the 13th amendment actually is. Probably because there's a huge narrative in blm that the ending of slavery merely put people in prison to continue using them as slaves. And he mentioned releasing people from prison
That's likely his meaning
Or I'm full of shit, either way it's Kanye being Kanye
I think he wants to abolish this cause its no longer needed, leave the past behind and make america whole
Fucking
This guy
He's a guy who clearly wants to see Americans happier, he's always talking about love.
His twitter handle is "ye"
Literally just ye.
Kanye West you fucking treasure.
What the fuck kind of autism did you just stumble upon there?
To think he's randomly advocating slavery now would be counter to everything he's ever said and done. It's completely out of character, so the most sensible thing to assume is that any claims he wants slavery to be legal are hyperbolic smears
SoCaLiSM is GoOd
Oh here we go. This article provides more context.
Iirc there's a documentary/propaganda film on Netflix called the 13th, which is all about how slavery just moved to prisons rather than it being abolished in spirit and in name both.
There's a fair point to be made regarding the commercialisation of the prison system, which is antithetical to the spirit of justice. It's profiteering by private companies. Prison Labour isn't bad in itself but it should be for the public good, for society, not for private profit.
true
having private prisons which have to meet quotas to be profitable sure is a fucking mess
Aye, it's not technically slavery but there's not a lot of separation between the two
They don't own the people but own the places they're imprisoned in for the duration of their sentence
Rent a slave
combined with this 3-strikes shit its just a endless source of labour
aye, deeply troubling
It''s effectively de-facto slavery.

years back i read an excellent paperback about the US prison system, written in the 70s. tis called kind and usual punishment by jessica mitford. a classic, old school muckraking journalist from a fabulously rich family. her work on prisons and on the funeral industry are really good. that book opened my eyes on prisons and the system really hasnt changed much since the 70s
Considering his wife is working on prison reform, this may be what he was referring to
The 13th effectively legitimizes prison labor
so he just wanted to say "amend aritcle 13"
indeed, looks that way
We're talking about it, aren't we?
only journalist i like more than jessica mitford is Åsne Seierstad
she wrote a fucking amazing book about the anders breivic massacre called One of Us
if you want a mindfuck, i recommend it
