I'm not a weeb but at this point I prefer anime to western animation by a mile

2018-10-15 05:05:55 UTC

I gave all my card that I had to my kid brother.

2018-10-15 05:06:14 UTC

i dont watch any animated shows at the moment

2018-10-15 05:06:42 UTC

I really don't either. I don't watch TV, and I don't have any current subscriptions to any streaming services.

2018-10-15 05:07:01 UTC

It depends for me. I'm really picky in general

2018-10-15 05:07:28 UTC

The only sort of "kids" thing that I follow any more is the Sonic comics. Those are pretty good.

2018-10-15 05:07:52 UTC

typically, to get made into an anime, you need to be very successful in manga or light novels. it is very meritocratic, so most animes are very good. trash still gets through, but all that matter in the industry is success. SJW stuff, which never sells, would not make it in the japanese market. at all.

2018-10-15 05:08:05 UTC

Oh yeah, for sure

2018-10-15 05:08:19 UTC

and that industry is competitive as fuuuuuck

2018-10-15 05:08:36 UTC

I think you see a lot more creativity because most anime is based on manga, and mangas usually have a single writer

2018-10-15 05:08:56 UTC

I don't now man, I've seen plenty of anime that's tantamounted to "a bunch of school age kids go on a wacky adventure to breakup their mundane school lives"

2018-10-15 05:09:00 UTC

Nothing is made by committee

2018-10-15 05:09:18 UTC

You're inevitably going to have shit with that kind of volume

2018-10-15 05:09:31 UTC

'successful' does not automatically mean 'good'. it has to make money, and those kinds of stories are popular over there

2018-10-15 05:09:43 UTC

I used to know this one weeb that literally wouldn't shut up to me about Sailor Moon.

2018-10-15 05:09:47 UTC

and some of them can be very good

2018-10-15 05:10:25 UTC

Gave me the usual lines of "You have to watch a good sub, the dub ruins it". I did try a sub, and I still found it annoying.

2018-10-15 05:10:26 UTC

sailor moon is a shoujo, which is designed for girls age 8-16. it is popular as fuck for that demographic

2018-10-15 05:10:41 UTC

He was like a 30 year old dude.

2018-10-15 05:10:44 UTC

Older than I am.

2018-10-15 05:10:51 UTC

Okay that's kind of weird

2018-10-15 05:10:57 UTC

you would want a seinen, which is designed for males age 18+

2018-10-15 05:11:07 UTC

my favorite anime is the older movies from the 80s and 90s, there are some decent shows too
but i think 98% of anime is shit, i cant stand the schoolgirl stuff, it really tainted the whole genre for me

2018-10-15 05:11:28 UTC

I think one reason I like it is because you have sutff for adults that isn't some tryhard comedy

2018-10-15 05:12:06 UTC

ive no idea why shoujos are popular among adult men in america. some can be good, and ive heard that shows like pretty cure feature a lot of extreme and excellent action, so i can understand on those shows

2018-10-15 05:12:18 UTC

There is that sort of problem here.

2018-10-15 05:12:27 UTC

but most shoujo feature a lot of romance and comedy

2018-10-15 05:12:28 UTC

Nobody here wants to make a "serious" cartoon for adults.

2018-10-15 05:12:38 UTC

good point

2018-10-15 05:12:39 UTC

Like that's what stood out about Samurai Jack Season 5.

2018-10-15 05:12:44 UTC

Fundamental failure to understand the market on their part

2018-10-15 05:12:58 UTC

First we got killed in cars, now we're getting killed in animation

2018-10-15 05:12:59 UTC

the last one was what, heavy metal?

2018-10-15 05:13:13 UTC

heavy metal 2?

2018-10-15 05:13:25 UTC

i mean, even shonen, which are designed for males aged 8-16, come across as adult over here cause of the excessive blood and violence usually in them

2018-10-15 05:13:43 UTC

one piece and naruto being the go to examples of such shows

2018-10-15 05:13:43 UTC

I don't know. I think Serious Cartoons in general are pretty dead.

2018-10-15 05:14:41 UTC

you wont find any serious cartoons in america outside of crowd funded ones and the like. most TV networks think 'cartoon = kids'

2018-10-15 05:14:42 UTC

Everything here in the west has to be super self aware half-drawn slapstick. Like they're trying to be sunday strips without any of the wit.

2018-10-15 05:14:59 UTC

did anyone have the encore action channel growing up? they aired anime movies geared towards an adult audience
that was the shit when i was little

2018-10-15 05:15:05 UTC

That's what happens when shit is designed by committee
