@Banjod Do you have any experience with mixing 808s and kicks together? I'm trying to give my drums a bit more kick. Cheers man.
Looking at this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ficloZ-fjO8
I don't really make music with kicks in it
what exactly do you mean give them more kick?
To give it more of a punch
So, you mix 808s together, with a standard kick sample.
However, as they are very close in terms of sharing the same frequencies, they can get muddy when mixed
well, the key about kicks is the rest of the music around them
kicks are usually perceived to be a way
even when they're not
so it's more about mixing the music around it
the more bass you have
the less of a kick you should have
or boominess of it
I see
what's usually done is having a boom and a "tick", a lower and higher kick
as an example of what I said earlier, you have
https://youtu.be/QQSYo_pC-QA?t=51
where the kick is perceived to be strong, but isn't really
The general idea I have tried to analyse the sample through an EQ plugin to find the bass frequencies and then boost them. So, if the 808 booms (speaker wobble), at say 50hz, I would boost it there and then do the opposite on the kick sample.
Yeah, the kick is more punchy than loud I guess in that song
I think sidechaning is going on there as well, to make the kick punch harder.
the kick just works well
the music is created around the kick
so it's not so much the kick in itself
the kick really depends on the music
that's the most I can say, really
Well, when I can finish my mix tomorrow, I will have to send it to you. Then, you might see the issue I'm trying to resolve. What monitors do you have btw?
I have jbl 308
but
Nice
kicks are really hard to get right
if you don't have the room
so it's not really about the speakers at that point
precisely because of the boom
you can create some really good kicks, then put them on some other speakers and they're shit in comparison
