@Banjod Do you have any experience with mixing 808s and kicks together? I'm trying to give my drums a bit more kick. Cheers man.

I don't really make music with kicks in it

2020-01-12 01:04:29 UTC

what exactly do you mean give them more kick?

To give it more of a punch

2020-01-12 01:06:07 UTC

So, you mix 808s together, with a standard kick sample.

2020-01-12 01:06:42 UTC

However, as they are very close in terms of sharing the same frequencies, they can get muddy when mixed

2020-01-12 01:07:12 UTC

well, the key about kicks is the rest of the music around them

2020-01-12 01:07:26 UTC

kicks are usually perceived to be a way

2020-01-12 01:07:29 UTC

even when they're not

2020-01-12 01:07:40 UTC

so it's more about mixing the music around it

2020-01-12 01:07:48 UTC

the more bass you have

2020-01-12 01:07:52 UTC

the less of a kick you should have

2020-01-12 01:07:59 UTC

or boominess of it

2020-01-12 01:08:26 UTC

I see

2020-01-12 01:08:31 UTC

of course if you're gonna mix two kicks together, you should remove the clashing frequencies

2020-01-12 01:08:55 UTC

what's usually done is having a boom and a "tick", a lower and higher kick

2020-01-12 01:09:38 UTC

as an example of what I said earlier, you have
https://youtu.be/QQSYo_pC-QA?t=51

2020-01-12 01:09:50 UTC

where the kick is perceived to be strong, but isn't really

2020-01-12 01:10:24 UTC

The general idea I have tried to analyse the sample through an EQ plugin to find the bass frequencies and then boost them. So, if the 808 booms (speaker wobble), at say 50hz, I would boost it there and then do the opposite on the kick sample.

2020-01-12 01:10:37 UTC

Yeah, the kick is more punchy than loud I guess in that song

2020-01-12 01:11:18 UTC

I think sidechaning is going on there as well, to make the kick punch harder.

2020-01-12 01:11:35 UTC

the kick just works well

2020-01-12 01:11:40 UTC

the music is created around the kick

2020-01-12 01:11:47 UTC

so it's not so much the kick in itself

2020-01-12 01:12:10 UTC

the kick really depends on the music
