like principles

2020-02-07 08:22:47 UTC

principles tend to just lock in the current system as it is

2020-02-07 08:25:32 UTC

hmm, principals are an instrument to enforce the status quo. Interesting, but I'll have to think on that.

2020-02-07 08:27:10 UTC

Principals are self-enforced

2020-02-07 08:27:30 UTC

Think of the principles our current system suggests that you adopt. Do the opposite

2020-02-07 08:30:05 UTC

You are correct that principals are handed down, from authority.

2020-02-07 08:30:45 UTC

I suppose you could even say from the Principal.

2020-02-07 08:32:02 UTC

I'm going to have to think about the relationship between principals and integrity. That's interesting, there's something to this that I haven't considered before.

2020-02-07 08:34:11 UTC

I always thought that someone who embodied integrity was someone who held to their principals. But, if the principals are bestowed from authority, then they didn't originate from the individual.

2020-02-07 08:34:54 UTC

I don't accept moral relativism, so the authority that bestowed the principals is either moral and just, or not.

2020-02-07 08:35:38 UTC

If the moral authority is corrupt, and the principals are held, then the individual has integrity.

2020-02-07 08:35:45 UTC

..but is corrupt.

2020-02-07 08:35:51 UTC

Mind blown

2020-02-07 08:36:27 UTC

Then you have to bring in the realist point of view. The Melian Dialogue is one of my favorites.

2020-02-07 08:38:53 UTC

Wait is that true what I was thinking out loud there? Does that check out? An individual with integrity only means that they are intact with the principals that were bestowed on them from the authority and has no bearing on morality?

2020-02-07 08:40:12 UTC

not all principles come from authority

2020-02-07 08:40:26 UTC

like in most of life, it depends

2020-02-07 08:41:04 UTC

the most principled communist might have integrity with how he defines it, but he can still do evil to others

2020-02-07 08:41:32 UTC

Most of my life I've held Integrity as my highest value, but I haven't revisited it in awhile.

2020-02-07 08:42:01 UTC

Yeah, I think that's true.

2020-02-07 08:45:45 UTC

Huh. Integrity, is by it's objective definition only the purity of form. A signal with full integrity is a signal in it's perfect form the way it was transmitted. It's purity of form has no bearing in the content being transmitted. Than integrity isn't a value itself, it's virtue is dependant on integrity to what values it's maintaining.

2020-02-07 08:48:03 UTC

My primary secular value most of my life can't really be a value at all. Thanks @McFansy

2020-02-07 08:48:11 UTC

I'm sorry

2020-02-07 08:48:18 UTC

Crushed.

2020-02-07 08:49:02 UTC

Didn't mean for you to psychoanalyze yourself tonight.

2020-02-07 08:50:07 UTC

All you have to do to fix this is to make sure your principles are aligned with the outcome you could live with.

2020-02-07 08:52:37 UTC

Well I've humbled myself to God natural laws. So whatever he says, that's the outcome.

2020-02-07 08:53:59 UTC

Night

2020-02-07 08:54:08 UTC
