especially in HK
And in school they call each other by their English names sometimes
Which is cringey
I was born in UK so I have an English/Christian first name and chinky last name
Cuz if I called one if my friends back in highschool by their name in Chinese class I'd get called a faggot and probably kicked to death
the chinks at my uni are legit like "hi, my name is rainy" or "please call me sunny"
<:chink:323022148870602752>
Eh, I can get why. Easier and less confusion
I'd rather just call them zhuangquanghuangqi
maybe
<:thenk:329322130804047872>
better yet, an actual english name
Sunny is outdated but technically still a name in the states
More a nickname actually.
there was a chink at my old school called "seaside" I shit you not
with everyone trying to reinvent the wheel with stupid shit names to inflict on thier kids I can see why they would be confused.
girl of course
Kek, was she a hippy or something?
nah, just your usual fresh off the boat chink teen
What's he supposed to say, shit isn't looking good and things are moving behind the scenes to try and figure thier footing? BBC wouldn't do that to a Labour politician.
This was right after results were declared and they lost their majority
Yeah, I know. I'd say the alliance with DUP was surprisingly fortuitous for the Torys from my angle. Now they are further right and they have a boogeyman to scare centrists and left leaning members with. Compare the haranguing of him to the hand holding they did following the Brexit vote.
There's a lot of infighting in the tory party these days and the DUP have on occasion voted against them, so how long this lasts is anyone's guess
Exciting though.
A few of my classmates from high school got their names legally changed to something english
Like someone got himself named Leon
I forgot the others, but if.they didnt do that calling them by their chinese names without using the proper intonation just sounds wrong
Tfw my chinese name means clean smoke
I dont even know who came up with it, sure as hell wasnt me
yan?
hong kong likes it more than mainland, but in a proper way. HK actually have GOOD english names
mainland is shit like angelababy, shrek, fucking spiderman, etc
gucci, porsche
its either let the kid pick it when they are 3 years old, so its fucking spiderman or happy, or let the parents pick it who dont speak english so its designer brands or famous people (jobs, musk, mark)
it's about 50%. When my students come in we usually suggest giving them an english name, mostly so they feel more connected to the language when they speak it, and most parents are understanding, and 50% are like "no! his name is chenchen!"
or when their kid is named spiderman and i suggest another name they are like "No! He chose spiderman! so thats his name!"
i hate how the parents think they know better than me. They tell me, in chinese, "I think my son's english grammar is poor", well how the fuck would you know? you dont speak english
they just make up shit for their kids to be bad at so they can complain
your son has 100 is everything, where could you possibly be getting this idea from
