Need to know more than just "melee"

im not sure about this game in particular but i feel it usually depends on your gear and weapon

do you want to be magical or physical damage

which can surpass just melee, yeah.

i want to use a bow

does magical melee damage still use weapons

if you want to use a bow play stamina night blade

a magical melee damage would use a staff

so you probably want physical

melee is tank or dps

well thats not all

melee can be stam dps or magical dps

but you most likely want stam dps melee

if you wanna tank you're gonna wanna have heavy armor, sets that increase your health, and put most of your points into health

while leveling, sure, but endgame not so much.

its more effiecent to put points into stam/magicka and use health enchantments engame
