What is it for?

2017-10-18 08:39:01 UTC

Like as opposed to not having one

2017-10-18 08:39:04 UTC

memes

2017-10-18 08:39:13 UTC

Ffs

2017-10-18 09:06:33 UTC

i just ordered a benjie s5

2017-10-18 10:00:39 UTC

@systemxd it converts 0 and 1's to an analogue waveform

2017-10-18 10:00:47 UTC

without one you can't play digital audio

2017-10-18 10:00:50 UTC

I get that

2017-10-18 10:01:08 UTC

But, why would you want one. Most speakers have one inside.

2017-10-18 10:01:17 UTC

every phone has one

2017-10-18 10:01:19 UTC

I get that an external one means that its better

2017-10-18 10:01:22 UTC

they're just of varying quality

2017-10-18 10:01:26 UTC

and as such

2017-10-18 10:01:34 UTC

if people want something that's good quality

2017-10-18 10:01:35 UTC

most good speakers don't

2017-10-18 10:01:41 UTC

they use an external one

2017-10-18 10:01:43 UTC

i can't think of many speakers that do actually

2017-10-18 10:01:56 UTC

shitty "computer speakers" might

2017-10-18 10:01:59 UTC

it's not rocket surgery

2017-10-18 10:13:59 UTC

Bluetooth speakers mostly

2017-10-18 11:43:29 UTC

I need it for my thinkpad

2017-10-18 11:43:34 UTC

the internal dac suuuuuuuucks

2017-10-18 11:43:55 UTC

I can hear hissing and whining and everything sounds like it has a vocal fry

2017-10-18 12:43:31 UTC

@ultimate-drawmaster buy a cheap pcm2704 dac then

2017-10-18 12:43:36 UTC

theyre decent

2017-10-19 00:43:42 UTC

@systemxd doesnt even mean its better tbh, external dac is 9/10 times just placebo

2017-10-19 00:44:31 UTC

only asctual improvement you get is if you have a _really old_ pc with super-shit onboard sound, or if you have some like ultra-retarded motherboard with a super shitty amp section after the onboard dac

2017-10-19 00:45:13 UTC

any vaguely competently designed computer or phone is gonna have a perfectly fine dac, may need amp but the dac itself you gotta _try_ to fuck up

2017-10-19 02:42:53 UTC

DAC/amps aren't useful for portable listening, but they're great for when you know you'll be in a relatively quiet room where noise floor is actually noticeable.

2017-10-19 02:58:26 UTC

noise floor will never be noticeable

2017-10-19 02:58:46 UTC

16 bit has a wider dynamic range than any music recording i have ever seen

2017-10-19 02:58:50 UTC

i have seen a lot of music

2017-10-19 02:59:18 UTC

an awful lot of audiophile hi fi 24 bit and higher music

2017-10-19 02:59:47 UTC

literally no advantage for listening, the information just isn't there to notice

2017-10-19 03:00:27 UTC

i'd prolly want one if i were using the dac as a function generator but i mean, i'd just use a function generator

2017-10-19 03:01:22 UTC

note: i do use an external dac myself, because i dont wanna reach around the back of my chassis or fuck around with extension cords to plug in a different headphone

2017-10-19 03:02:29 UTC

also because is not a dac it's a whole 2 in 2 out codec with phantom power and all that

2017-10-19 04:17:33 UTC

does a dac even matter if you use bluetooth headphones

2017-10-19 04:17:37 UTC

plz no crucify

2017-10-19 04:33:34 UTC

@Tonmonkeyla bluetooth only transmit digital music, there's always a dac on your headphones

2017-10-19 05:17:42 UTC

Tonmonkeyla: You're right, it doesn't matter. And I'm not so sure all bluetooth headphones has DAC, since bluetooth is digital anyway when it's transmitting. But every bluetooth headphone has a built-in sound card
