That was a leaf spring?
How does spring steel like being worked like that?
5160 forges beautifully.
And it's fairly easy to grind as long as you temper it to a gray color to get it soft.
I'm about to start another blade so I'll put up a little picture series for you @Just for youtube [NB1]
Ty
Its Its suuuuper stiff obviously but
When you heat it does it lose the spring factor
Lol
Or you cant really tell because it's so stiff to begin with
About to cut a strip off the spring to put it in the forge
Yes, the final hardness depends on the temper heat
When forging you go up to a high red/orange heat around 2000 degrees so it loses all its stiffness.
You have to re-harden it after grinding by quenching, in oil for this type of steel.
@uncephalized are you making a sword?
This knife forging thing is becoming so popular
Got a cutlass in progress @Clive
Yeah well it is pretty dang fun @Just for youtube [NB1]
But no @Clive right now just making some little knives.
you, sir, are fucking awesome
Thanks man, I'm trying to make a living out of this so I try my best.
You've sold them?
I've sold a few. Just formed an LLC recently. I do repair work on swords and stuff too.
This is some of my best work to date
Ah I have some other ones but the files are too big and I'm not at my desktop.
I hate you, @uncephalized. 🤣
Working in the preform tapers
dude, that's dope
You have a blacksmithing shop.
Or access to one, anyways.
(Relax, I'm mostly joking. 😉)
wish i had talent like that. I'm stuck with this stupid drawing ability 😂
drew*
Drawed??
Drawified?
@Mandatory Carry I started out with some rusty dull files and a floor sander clamped upside down in a bench vise. If you want to do it, do it.
at least you have a talent
cool man!
