I would actually want one of the "newer" Garands. Like a .308

2019-09-20 16:53:28 UTC

Oh that got spaced out, weird

2019-09-20 16:53:37 UTC

2019-09-20 16:53:57 UTC

@Clive I'd recommend ether building from Palmetto State Armory or buying a Smith and Wesson AR

2019-09-20 16:54:06 UTC

for a first rifle

2019-09-20 16:54:14 UTC

I think that's just called an M14 @Beemann 😉

2019-09-20 16:54:15 UTC

I would start with a handgun. You can take those more places

2019-09-20 16:54:19 UTC

^^^

2019-09-20 16:54:44 UTC

i wouldn't take it anywhere until I was trained and proficient with it

2019-09-20 16:54:47 UTC

and there are *tons* of good, affordable choices in the handgun market

2019-09-20 16:54:55 UTC

There's also an M14, but there were specifically garands rechambered with the newer standardized round

2019-09-20 16:55:03 UTC

yeah i dont think my wife will fly with that

2019-09-20 16:55:16 UTC

with a handgun

2019-09-20 16:55:21 UTC

Shotgun?

2019-09-20 16:55:24 UTC

Most gun ranges you can find are indoors and may not allow rifles, I think is what "take it places" means

2019-09-20 16:55:26 UTC

I'm pretty sure that's the Garand "everyone else" has anyway

2019-09-20 16:55:51 UTC

Take places is concealed carry

2019-09-20 16:56:03 UTC

i assumed you meant CCW

2019-09-20 16:56:05 UTC

Which means I can buy it here in leafland, where it is explicitly allowed, by name

2019-09-20 16:56:06 UTC

That too

2019-09-20 16:56:21 UTC

@Clive then I recommend an affordable AR option

2019-09-20 16:56:30 UTC

If you can conceal carry a AR you have more talent than I

2019-09-20 16:56:42 UTC

**A**ssault **R**ifle

2019-09-20 16:56:43 UTC

S&W or PSA are both $450-550 new

2019-09-20 16:56:52 UTC

Armalite

2019-09-20 16:56:55 UTC

15 bullets per sec?

2019-09-20 16:56:56 UTC

It's fairly easy to convert a garand to 308, just a barrel swap and optionally a clip spacer so you don't accidentally load the normal ammo

2019-09-20 16:57:11 UTC

wait

2019-09-20 16:57:12 UTC

hold on

2019-09-20 16:57:27 UTC

?

2019-09-20 16:57:49 UTC

is this correct: The AR-15 was never a military weapon, it has only ever been a civilian weapon? ergo its not a weapon of war and never has been?

2019-09-20 16:57:58 UTC

eh

2019-09-20 16:58:17 UTC

if you're talking a colt AR circa 1970s, yes

2019-09-20 16:58:19 UTC

I want a Springfield Saint

2019-09-20 16:58:23 UTC

It was designed for the military I think, but they sold it to Colt and they changed it for the final M16

2019-09-20 16:58:34 UTC

^^^

2019-09-20 16:59:04 UTC

the AR 10 was deveoloped by Eugene Stoner for the military, chambered in 308. They just remade it to fire the 5.56 NATO round

2019-09-20 16:59:27 UTC

so the m16/m4 is adapted from the civilian model of the AR10

2019-09-20 16:59:38 UTC

AR 10=5 AR safer!

2019-09-20 16:59:48 UTC

Not!

2019-09-20 16:59:55 UTC

But colloquially we use that term to describe any modern rifle that is parts-compatible with the original design
