i have mixed feelings about libertarians, on one hand i want stuff to not be decided by gov, because i don't trust the gov to do the correct thing, but i also don't trust that in the perfect authoritiaran state, that the side i support will not change into something i don't support
got to agree with that, but authoritarianism has the issue of rebellions 😦 , i wouldn't be surprised if there were less innovations (we have china as an example of just that) etc, its quite a rigid system and therefore can't take a lot of bend
tbh, i think the only way an authoritarian system would work if there was some sort of immortal leader... like i dunno, an AI overlord, one could say
An immortal leader that remains benevolent eternally and either delegates work to more competent people or who knows everything
who knows everything
look at china, everyone is corrupt there, and if the leader decides that they will do X, even if he does it wholeheartily, the next guy down does almost everything correctly, but does x wrong, to save money and give it to himself, and that continues down the chain, until you got nothing from the original plan left, once you reach the local level
Okay so authoritarianism works if it's God then :^)
@Avald
*"now those are just anarchists."*
That's libertarians all right. Just as bad as authoritarians, because one leads libertarian leads inevitable to authoritarian, and authoritarian ussually leads directly to anarchy.
Isnt authoritarianism the polar opposite of libertarianism?
Theoretically, yes.
Pragmatically, no.
I don't follow, everything I know about libertarianism says "the government should leave people alone as much as possible" whereas authoritarianism says "the government should be in control of people as much as possible"
Sounds kind of like the notion that fascism, the government system that highly values collectivism instead of individualism and government control of things, is somehow right wing, when the right favors individualism and private, rather than public control.
neither one of you addressed the above assertion that authoritarianism and libertarianism are pragmatically the same thing.
Libertarians want *NO* state; No third party controls.
Lack of any controls lead to anarchy.
Anarchy leads to warlords, for legitimate self-defense and for exansionist purposes.
Warlords become dictators, and ussually pretty corrupt ones.
Case study: Somalia.
Somalia? I'm sure no libertarian would ever call Somalia a libertarian state
"Libertarian" is synonymous with "anarchist" in the dictionary of Mandatory Carry
Mandy, your argument is undone by the fact that I'd call myself a libertarian and I'm a Minarchist
And anyone claiming otherwise, he will call a liar
left-libertarian maybe syn with anarchist, but right-libertarian (which is most American libertarians) aren't
We've had this exact debate several times now
***I*** haven't
my only issue is that Mike here says that libertarianism and authoritarianism are the same thing
