Even Medieval Kings had limited powers. Kings didn't get absolutist power until after the 1500's.

2017-03-02 04:28:05 UTC

Charles First, but then they got Cromwell.

2017-03-02 04:28:13 UTC

CROMWELL!

2017-03-02 04:28:25 UTC

A true monarch understands that s/he owes a duty to the people just as much as the subjects owe respect and loyalty to the monarch. That is the point of the monarchy. Everyone is the servant of someone else.

2017-03-02 04:32:17 UTC

Blame the Stuarts for the whole "Divine Rights" thing. That was Charles's defense at his trial. "God gave me power therefore I rule." He forgot that the monarch owes a duty to his subjects. Parliament reminded him of that forcefully.

2017-03-02 04:37:41 UTC

And that attitude is what led to the rise of Protestantism in England. Henry VIII asked for a divorce, the pope denied him due to politics. Henry booted out the church, instituted the CoE, made himself the head, and gave himself a divorce.

2017-03-02 04:38:34 UTC

Its been awhile since I've heard someone ask for the return to Kings and Kingdoms.
