I was taught hell is the absense of gods presence and that is the worst thing for those who want to be with god.

Purgatory is painful tho, depending on how much your sins make up who you are you are forced to painfully burn away/change yourself to be with god or give up and live without god for eternity.

The idea behind this soft interpretation was that people of other faiths may be in "hell" but they wouldn't know or care as it isn't their diety they would be with.
