@Legalize @nadrud funny you guys are discussing software driven operation of other vehicles ie. trains, earlier in the week i was placed on a new dev team at my new job to create the software framework for a total scrap and rewrite of the rail and subway systems safety/security/data collection/route mappings/scheduling solution that is currently deployed in tons of major cities ie. NYC, Chicago, Dallas/Ft Worth, etc

The software that they use is literally more than 20 years old for the core subsystem and like 12 years old for the user interface graphical software end, written in shitty Java and C, so they want a massive rewrite of it all in C# and WPF

Its not anything resembling AI or self driving trucks and machine vision type stuff that would be required for that, integrations with road maps, traffic apis, etc

But they are pretty much operated and safety protected via code, the train "engineer" "conductor" is largely a guy who wears a hat and hits GO lol

what was your point though about it?

yang is saying these people who have invested their life savings into trucks and are contracted by companies to move product from A to B are going to lose everything because of self driving vehicles

so you have to ask youself, are these companies all of a sudden going to invest into a fleet of self driving vehicles, which is the main cost, instead of contracting the work out, to people who may own the vehicles who may be able to ride dormant the the majority of the ride and kick into gear when they hit major metropolis centers?

hes portraying it as a doomsday situation bc there are many more truck drivers than rail, ship or bus

That is a valid concern and truck drivers is his little pet issue just because its the #1 job in certain areas, but largely across ALL sectors, tech, robotics, AI, smart manufacturing, these things are my entire career and i love doing them, but we are causing a GIANT problem

they cannot drive if there is anything covering the lines such as snow... but somehow someone will wirelessly be abel to transmit into the vehicle and take control

if they cant do it with trains on fixed rails

it will be a lonnnnggg time until the safety admin's of this country will allow a xton truck drive w/e human intervention down the highway

what do you mean "if they cant do it with trains", they do, trains pretty much run themselves and have for like 2 decades

and look at the statistics of autopilot on Tesla

if that ssytem went down and then thousands of 18 whellers all of a sudden were out of control they would make a train wreck look like a dropped egg

but do they still have a conductor?
