If I move to some small town in the Midwest, I'd imagine there might not be anyone with tech and science skills nearby, or even a place looking for people with that skillset

Yeah. I made a script that can webscrape indeed for specific terms and return a spreadsheet of possible jobs that suit me. It's basically a reverse applicant tracking software that finds key works in the job descriptions. The areas of the country which are better for me to live in hardly look for many of these skills
