if you were to purchase a temperature meter and use it in your daily life...how would you know it was *wrong*

but how could one conclude that the meter is working based on the accurate measurement of water boiling

for let us say, the meter was set at maximum 100C and it read 100C, how would you know it wouldn't raise all the way to 125C without the obstruction?

and then, mustn't you at all times also assume that the numbers on the scale are accurately spaced out too...
