No Aristotle without Plato.

And Socrates was the forerunner to Plato.

2018-09-16 21:11:02 UTC

I mean, sure, is it possible that Aristotle, or someone else would have said the same things had there never been a Plato? Presumably. But we could never know. That's why historical analysis that asks "What might have happened had this person/event/phenomena not existed?" is always purely speculative. Because, we can't empirically test history against anything else.

2018-09-16 21:11:57 UTC

Even if you had a supercomputer to simulate alternative histories, the computer script to simulate those events would have to make assumptions about how historical events interact.

2018-09-16 21:12:20 UTC

So, the only "scientific" way to talk about history is purely observational.

2018-09-16 21:13:07 UTC

And historically speaking, the fact that Plato, and especially the Republic, was foundational to the Western philosophical tradition is undeniable. Much of Aristotle's work was commentaries on Plato.

be ready for an essay boys:

2018-09-16 21:15:49 UTC

And that's why I'm doing a series on the Republic. Because, I come from the Western Philosophical Tradition and so understanding my thought, (and my interpretation of other's thought) requires some familiarity with the basic touchstones of that tradition.

2018-09-16 21:16:10 UTC

a series? where, may I ask?

2018-09-16 21:16:20 UTC

On my channel.
