aluminum oxide quickly forms on the surface of aluminum which isn't reactive, also i don't believe thats mercury i believe it's gallium. The reason he puts the droplet of gallium down in the dent is because he grinded that little dent out and quickly put the gallium on before oxide formed.

So it would be somewhat useless against robots unless you could put the gallium in a shrapnel explosive
